Bangladesh: Intense violence during the quota reform movement (several hundred dead). Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country 5 August. Relative stabilisation of the security situation after an interim government was set up 8 August, despite persistent sporadic violence between rival supporters.

Congo (DRC): The DRC is the epicentre of the Mpox epidemic, mainly due to the progression of the clade 1b strain (18,000 suspected cases and more than 630 deaths since the start of 2024). The WHO activated its highest level of alert in reaction to the global spread of Mpox 14 August.

Nigeria: Mass protest movement from 1 to 10 August against bad governance and the high cost of living. Intense clashes between the security forces and demonstrators in major cities (at least 22 dead) and security measures stepped up at a local level in response (curfew). Wet season: flooding resulting in loss of life and considerable damage throughout the country, especially in the northwest.

United Kingdom: Xenophobic riots until mid-August in several cities across England and Northern Ireland in the wake of the Southport knife attack 29 July (3 children killed). Increase in attacks on mosques and immigration detention centres, as well as businesses associated with minorities; clashes with the security forces (more than 120 police officers injured in the clashes). Mass demonstrations against racism in reaction.

Russia: Land incursion by the Ukrainian army into the Kursk Oblast (1,000 km² still occupied by Kyiv). Escalation of Ukrainian strikes on oblasts at the border with Ukraine and an increase in strikes deeper into the territory. Mass evacuation of people affected by the fighting and security measures stepped up at a local level (state of emergency).
